Tax at Checkout

Sales tax is worked out automatically and shown on your cart and payment
summary before you pay. Each seller collects sales tax only in the states
where they have told us they are registered, at the rate that applies
there. A seller who isn't registered where your order is taxed adds no tax.

How Tax Is Worked Out

  • Things that ship to you are taxed at your delivery address, at the rate the seller collects for that state (in North Carolina, the exact state and county rate for that address), combined into one line.
  • Event tickets are taxed where the event happens, not where you live, because that is where an admission is used. A ticket-only order never asks for an address.
  • In person, a sale is taxed at the seller's own location.
  • Delivery charges are included in the amount that's taxed.

What Is Taxable

  • Physical products — yes
  • Digital products — only when your order also ships something to you. An order of digital items alone doesn't ask for an address, so no tax is added to it at checkout
  • Event tickets — only when the seller has marked that ticket type taxable; many are not
  • Donations — never. A gift is not a sale

No Tax Shown?

If you don't see tax on your order, it may be because:

  • The seller is not registered to collect tax where your order is taxed
  • Everything in your cart is a donation or an untaxed ticket type
  • The order is being delivered to a state where the seller doesn't collect tax
  • Your order holds only digital items, so no address was asked for
