Who Controls Your Data?

When you interact with organizations on Equipoise, different types of data are managed differently. This guide explains what you control versus what organizations maintain.

Your Subscription (You Control)

When you subscribe to an organization's communications, you control:

  • Email address: The email where you receive communications
  • Name: How you'd like to be addressed
  • Subscription status: Whether you receive emails from that organization
  • Unsubscribe anytime: Via the link in any email

Managing Your Subscription

Every email from an organization includes an Unsubscribe link at the bottom. Click it to instantly stop receiving emails from that organization.

Important: Organizations cannot override your unsubscribe preference. Once you unsubscribe, you will not receive marketing emails until you choose to resubscribe.

Resubscribing

Changed your mind? You can resubscribe by:

  • Using the resubscribe link on the unsubscribe confirmation page
  • Signing up again on the organization's newsletter form

Organization Records (They Maintain)

Organizations maintain their own records about your relationship with them:

  • Purchase history: Products you've bought
  • Donation records: Contributions you've made
  • Event attendance: Tickets you've purchased
  • CRM notes: Their internal notes about your relationship
  • Tags: How they categorize contacts (donor, customer, VIP, etc.)

Why This Matters

This separation means:

  1. Unsubscribing stops emails but doesn't delete your purchase history
  2. Organizations can't email you if you've unsubscribed, even if they have your purchase records
  3. Your preferences are portable: You can have different subscription preferences for different organizations

Different Organizations, Different Preferences

If you've interacted with multiple organizations on Equipoise:

  • Each organization has a separate subscription
  • Unsubscribing from one doesn't affect others
  • Your email preferences are specific to each organization

Deleting Your Data

To stop communications

Use the unsubscribe link in any email.

To delete transaction history

Contact the organization directly and request data deletion.

To delete your Equipoise account

Go to Account Settings > Delete Account. This removes your login but doesn't automatically delete data organizations have about your transactions.

Your Rights

Under various privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA), you have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of data an organization has about you
  • Correction: Request updates to inaccurate information
  • Deletion: Request deletion of your personal data
  • Portability: Request your data in a machine-readable format
